Het vervoer van auto laadkisten ontwikkeld door NS en DAF en uitgevoerd door NS an ATO/Van Gend & Loos. To meet the competition from road transport, the Dutch Railways together with lorry manufacturer DAF in the 1930s developed a system of small containers and special road vehicles which could transfer the containers between wagons and ground level at the customers' premises. This found wide use through the 1960s.
