Locomotives and rolling stock. Sundance Books 2006. 416 pages 21x28 cm, hb.
This 12 volume series is likely to be the most comprehensive work on a 260 km narrow gauge system anywhere. The Rio Grande Southern Railroad in Colorado existed 1891-1951 to bring out rich ores. It connected with the D&RGW at both ends, Ridgway and Durango, and at steep grades crossed the San Juans where the bigger railroad company had feared to tread.
The first eleven volumes describe in detail a section of the railroad with its station, trestles and scenery, and some aspect of the RGS history. It is illustrated with a wealth of line drawings (by Mike Blazek), maps and monochrone photographs from its heyday, last years and latter day remains in colour.
Each volume is a joy to study. The binding is a Sundance signature: leather spine, vintage colour photo front and back, protected by a plastic jacket. This is the final volume. The lowest price we have seen on the web is $150.
