Burns & Laird Lines Ltd. and its two components occupy a special place in maritime history. The origins of G & J Burns and the Laird Line are intertwined with the beginning of regular steamer sailings, and both were early and important members of the Coast Lines Group. The combined company went on to become an institution on Irish Sea routes, surviving until the 1970s. In the Ships in Focus tradition this new pictorial history pulls out all the stops to show how the fleet developed and to detail individual ships. Photographs of ships built as early as 1863 have been found, whilst the photographic record is complete for Burns & Laird Ltd. since its inception in 1922. Indeed every ship owned since the 1890s is illustrated under the companies' or other ownership. A superb 96-page hardback, it includes over 200 photographs, with design and reproduction which ensures the full impact of some stunning shots.
